I came acrossed this in one of my groups, I for one am horrified at the significance of this article. I certainly hope that everyone reads this and maybe, by chance, post your feelings about it to the board Subject: Witch In Need of Rescue Greetings List Members, A situation has been brought to my attention, and I am posting it so that you can see it yourselves. You may decide if it is important or not. I am not asking you to take action on this matter, but if you feel that you must, please behave in a responsible manner. This is one of those situations that can inflame the temper, but cooler minds must prevail. A Fruit and Vegetable Stand in Florida has placed a life size doll of a witch on a stake, with wood piled at her feet. They also have a white figure hanging from a noose nearby. They are claiming it is Halloween fun, but if they had put any other race or religion on that stake it would be wrong. The web page to view the doll and the read the entire situation is dominick.cc/witchrescue.htm

follow up post from group:
Start Quoted text: GAIA: This Halloween display has received a LOT of publicity over the internet over the last few days, and i have an UPDATE -- a report i'd like everyone to please pass along to all your groups --
I just spent over an hour on the phone with Kathy, owner of the produce stand and the woman responsible for the display; and to be fair, i think it's important to recognize several things:
1. The display "witch" is only identifiable because it's wearing a dark dress and has a "broom" beside her; otherwise she might be just about anything/anybody in a black dress.
2. There are several different images on display, including mummies, black cats, skeletons, pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, etc etc.
3. this woman, Kathy, has been displaying these halloween images for years as part of her personal celebration of the holiday, as well as the kind of marketing ploys used by most business people at this time of year.
4. Kathy had absolutely NO knowlege of or intent to offend any group of people. As far as she was concerned, it was just another Halloween party image.
5. Kathy was completely unaware of and horrified that anyone currently suffers any religious intolerance or persecution related to Paganism, let alone that she might be contributing to it in any way.
6. She has received a great deal of publicity over this matter, including telephone messages that have been insulting, obnoxious, even pornographic and threatening. THAT is *NOT* the way to help educate people and win them over to understanding, appreciating and respecting us, folks.
7. As i said, i spoke to her for over an hour -- she took that much time and effort out of a busy business -- to discuss the matter at length with me -- and i found her to be respectful, thoughtful, sensitive and well intentioned.
8. If every display that had the possibility of offending someone was removed, there would be NO displays whatsoever. As Kathy noted, an Egyptian might take offense at the mummies....etc etc. It's important to make sure that we are not just finding, cultivating ways to be offended....
