Hmm okay I was wondering this so lol just decided to post it. I was searching for other message boards and came across some more wiccan ones... but they weren't worth stayin' . but they were discussing how alot of people view Scott Cunningham as a fluff bunny! I've never heard him called that lol I think he has the best "basics" books out there! and I read that their definition of a fluff is a white lighter? umm lol so first off what's a white lighter? I kinda got an idea from them but still... and what is everyone's definetion of a "fluff or fluffy" or whatever it is lol idk. To me I always thought a "fluff" was one of those kids who said they were wiccan and also vampires and saying they have "special powers" and all that hollywood stuff. Just wondering everyone else's input!

No I certainly do NOT think Scott Cunningham is "Fluff"! Thats ridiculous! Hes an excellent author and has shared his vast wealthy knowledge with us - all of us, Im sure weve all read his books! And to repay him - the least we can do is pay our thanks - NOT call him fluff! I am NOT too pleased right now!
My idea of "fluff" associated with Wicca is...a person who walks around going "IM A WITCH!!! Im going to turn you into a frog, or do a spell for you for $20 or Im gong to curse you" type of thing. And that description doenst resemble Scott Cunningham at all...so I dont knkow what all this Cunningham and Fluff business is all about!
And Ive been to a few other wiccan message boards as well - half of the posts are worthless. Half of those posts are haters who come and posts about what wicca IS and ISNT when they dont even know what its aobut and make all these silly and hateful accusations! And other posts would be about doing love spells or smoething. that is NOT my idea of a good wicca board!

lol yea this board is BEST!!!!!! O gosh I know I LOVE Cunningham! Well wherever they got that info from the people were calling him a fluff meaning a white lighter meaning something like he only does the "goody good" type of stuff... he doesn't even recomend working with "dark" goddesses. Like he doesn't acknowledge\accept that our goddess has a dark side too? ? idk it was SOMETHING like that. idk it was a secondary source if you knwo what i mean. ::sigh:: yea I just wondered if anyone else ever heard him called that... i certainly NEVER have!!!! yea I agree with you on that whole "fluff" definition too.

hmmm im guessing the "white lighter" stuff would be from the TV show Charmed...they use the term "white lighter" and "dark lighter" stuff like that...
Aobut hte whole frog thing LOL....haha those people are FUNNY...they make me LAUGH, as long as they dont take it as far as insulting wicca - its funny - its almost as if they believe it themselves. But if they insult wicca, thats taking it too far and its NOT funny anymore. When i first started researching aobut Wicca (i did this at school - silly me!) this guy actually asked me "oh so are you gonna turn me into a frog or something or curse me or cast a spell on me" I jsut gave him a sigh, rolled my eyes and ignored him. I just dont think its even worth explaining it to him. I guess thats my problem, Im not willing to explain to naive people who jump to their own accusations the truth. I dont think theyre worht my time lol...haha im a little high strung or a little stuck up if thats what you call it lol...just sometimes! and jsut a little bit!

I know I seem to be alone in this opinion, although why is beyond me, but I don't believe Scott Cunningham has one interesting word to say about witchcraft. All his books are characterised by a complete lack of content, take for example his section on tools in his Guide for Solitary Wiccans, here we find such wisdom as "the censer is an incense burner" and the "cup is a cauldron on a stem", are people really so stupid that they need to be told things like this?
What amazes me is that all his books are like this. Each time he manages to perform the pagan version of the loaves & fishes miracle, spreading a negligable amount of information over 200 odd pages. I just don't understand why beginner book has to equate with lack of content. If people aren't prepared to invest the time into understanding things properly then there's no point in bothering in the first place. Rather you spend time understanding fully & delay practice than rush into practice on flimsy empty foundations.
Take his Living Wicca book as an illustrative case in point. Do we really need a whole chapter discussing whether or not we should practice ritual when we're bedridden with illness? Apparently so as this subject is so important it is awarded a whole chapter, I would have thought common sense would have answered it.
This book also infuriatingly propagates the idea that you are ready to make your own tradition on the basis of the rubbish that fills its pages. Step one as one might have suspected is the choosing of your tools, but first you must be told that "the cup holds wine", "incense is burned in the censer" & that the "bell is rung at certain points", all very essential information for the intelligent witch I'm sure.
In this book (Living Wicca) a chapter on ritual design follows & armed with the knowledge that red & black are good colours for Samhain and that pomegranates are particularly seasonal, you can apparently construct your Sabbats. It seemingly doesn't matter that you know practically nothing of the meanings behind them, just so long as your colours are right. It's no wonder that his ritual suggestions are amongst the most tawdry that I have ever come across, which is saying something considering some of the circles I have been to.
Once all this is out the way you can learn the beliefs of Wicca (or what Scott percieves they are anyway) in all of 4 pages, this truly is the "philisophical look" at witchcraft promised in the blurb on its back cover.
You've created your Book of Shadows, so what next? Well it seems to be assumed that you are ready to teach & spread your trite shallow tradition with others. It apparently doesn't matter that you don't know very much because Cunningham believes "you already know more about Wicca than many others".
In short this book, like all his others, are absolute trash. They are a waste of time, money & energy. If anyone really believes that once they have read these books that they are following anything even approximating Wicca, then they are sorely misguided.
Personally I would suggest looking at the books listed in the "What to read" section, such as Agrippa, Valiente, Phil Hine etc etc.
FFFF Martin
Cunningham indeed!

WOW and hear's another thign i found on him. They had some sort of "fluff factor" thing going... ravenwolf was above him on the list though too.
SCOTT CUNNINGHAM
Fluff Factor: 9/10 Propaganda Factor: 7.7/10 Historical Inaccuracy: 7/10 Hypocrisy: 1/10 Contradictory Level: 1.5/10 Conning Skills: 1.9/10 Psychotic Babbling: 1/10
Scott Cunningham comes out with a score of 41% on the Plague LevelTM chart.
Now, Cunningham's score is relatively low, but that's only because some of the categories he's not guilty of weren't high. Still and all, his Fluff Factor, Propaganda Factor, and Historical Inaccuracy were way high, and those are the three catagories that count the most. He is the protege of our dear Ravenwolf, and always a constant source of inspiration for her. She's even gone as far in beating him out of being the high exhaulted fluffy one. I don't really have much to say about him, except that his books started the whole thing.
